久々の今日の表現です。今日は2つの記事からご紹介です。

ひとつめは、PlasMedia Selects Helius For Its Mall Digital SIgnage Network という記事を読んでいた時に見つけた “sneaker net” という表現。

As Focus Media in China will confirm, the ‘sneaker net‘ model of teams of people updating screens manually can in many cases be an efficient, low cost and reliable solution.  

これを英辞郎で調べると、訳語はそのまま「スニーカー・ネット」となっていて、説明を読むと、

PC 間で通信ネットワークが構築されておらず、磁気メディアなどを人が持ち運んで PC 間のデータ交換をしている状態。（オフィスなどの）IT 化レベルの低さなどを皮肉った表現。◆【語源】人間がスニーカーを履いて（歩いて）データを届けるため。

と書かれていました。面白い表現ですね。

ただし、上に挙げた例文では「スニーカー・ネット」も悪いもんじゃないという事例として書かれていますね。

もうひとつは、ViewSonic Puts Digital Signage in a Box という記事を読んでいる時に見つけた “fruition” という表現。

Given the demand, many new and innovative systems, like ViewSonic’s all-in-one package, are coming to fruition to help businesses further development and attract more customers.

これは辞書をひくと「達成」とか「成就」という意味が載っています。Cobuildでこの単語を調べてみると、

If something comes to fruition, it starts to succeed and produce the results that were intended or hoped for. (FORMAL)

ということで、例文に出てくるような “come to fruition” というコロケーションで使われることがわかります。最後に『新編 英和活用大辞典』でも調べてみると、

The plan has come [been brought] to fruition.

という例文が載っていました。
